EVAC 27/06, 4/07, 11/07 – Early View of AVCon Competition

Posted by Alethea Lim On June - 26 - 2014

Over the next few Fridays, EVAC will be hosting tournaments for Super Smash Bros! We’ve seen lots of Smash action lately and are excited to host pre-AVCon tournaments for both Melee and Brawl.

Tournament Schedule:

27th June: Warm up with Project M. The popular fan-mod for Brawl! Project M won’t be at AVCon but it’s a great spin on the Smash Bros series which lots of EVAC attendees have been enjoying as of late.
4th July: Melee. Melee is one of the oldest games we feature at AVCon and it still holds a strong following.
11th July: Brawl. AVCon’s largest tournament!

EVAC starts at 4pm and signups will start at this time. We will aim to start the tournament at 5pm but may need to do so earlier if we get lots of entrants. Late entries may be permitted depending on discretion of the Tournament Organiser. We’ll try and be done by 8pm but it’s very possible that we may run overtime.

Tournament rules/format:

Formats for each tournament will be decided on the day based on signups. But to give you an idea, we’ll likely evaluate which format to use in the following manner:

Tons of signups: Single elimination, best of 1.
Lots of signups: Single elimination, best of 3.
A moderate number of signups: Double elimination, best of 1.
Not many signups: Double elimination, best of 3.

Other rules:

Basically boils down to no extended/infinite combos (we don’t have all night) and no excessive stalling.
Where matches are played Best of 3 (or more) counterpicking will be used to determine stages.

Tournament Entry/Prizes:

Entry to all the tournaments will be free.
There will be no prizes but tournament results will be used to inform player seeding at AVCon.
We might also throw in some neat stuff for first place winners. Stay tuned!
UPDATE 27/06: Plans have fallen through for neat stuff. Maybe another time.

About AVCon

AVCon was founded in 2002 by EVAC (then known as AUVGA) and AJAS (the Japanese Animation society). Since then it’s grown into a massive convention! AVCon runs every year in July and over the years many EVAC regulars have dedicated their time to volunteering at AVCon.

About EVAC

EVAC is Adelaide University’s Gaming club. We meet every Friday from 4 to 8pm to play a variety of console games. We also love card games, board games and we’re probably the largest Mah Jong club on campus!

Everyone is welcome to attend weekly meetings. Club membership is not mandatory but costs $5 per year for Adelaide Uni students and $10 for others. Members get a cool buy-3-get-one-free deal at Pulp Fiction Comics and discounts at The Pad Bar and Lounge.

A map of the Adelaide University North Terrace campus is below. We meet in the Harry Medlin North, which is on level 4 of Union House.

The OCG Winter Arena will comprise of 16 teams in a double-elimination format. The OCG Winter Arena will award Riot Points to the top four teams alongside a limited edition Triumphant Ryze skin to the top placing team.

More details on the OCG Winter Arena may be found here.

EVAC will be running an online based tournament from the 26th of April through to the 4th of May. Teams and individuals may sign up here.

EVAC 21/03/2014 – Puyo Puyo Tetris

Posted by Alethea Lim On March - 20 - 2014

After much anxious waiting our copy of Puyo Puyo Tetris has arrived – so we’re very excited to make it Game of the Week this week!

We also created a Facebook Group that you can join to stay updated on club activities and contribute to discussion. We actually do still check the forums regularly also, despite its barrenness, so if you’re not a Facebook person don’t be afraid to post something over there.

EVAC 14/03/2014 – Jamestown

Posted by Alethea Lim On March - 12 - 2014

Jamestown this week! Since this game largely co-operative we’ll award points based on participation. If you want to play on a pad you’ll need to bring it yourself, for now we can only guarantee keyboard and mouse.

Last week’s Halo “tournament” also turned into a participation-based reward system for points. Our points table will be updated soon.

EVAC 07/03/2014 – Halo 4

Posted by Alethea Lim On March - 4 - 2014

We’re into week 2 of our Game of the Week challenge, for which we’ll be pulling out Halo 4. The last time EVAC held a Halo competition was back in 2005 (We were called AUVGA back then!)

Participating in our weekly challenges earns you points – current standings can be found at our 2014 challenges page.

We don’t tend to play much in the way of FPS games, so if you’re after some easy points now is the time to come along and paste all of the EVAC regulars! It’ll also be a perfect opportunity to get the ball rolling if you want to see more FPS games at EVAC.

The Extremely Versatile Adventurer Challenge

Posted by Alethea Lim On February - 24 - 2014

Every week from O’Week 2014 until AVCon, EVAC will offer members the chance to earn points in its inaugural Extremely Versatile Adventurer Challenge. At each meeting we’ll announce activities and challenges that will earn you points. Will the points actually do anything? Probably not! But you can brag about them.

We’re going to try and keep up a new Game of the Week every week until AVCon. Depending on how it goes, we may be able to extend it all the way through to the end of the year. If you’d like to suggest a title or bring along a game to share then you can discuss it on the forums or at one of our meetings.

For our first Game of the Week we’ll have Mario Kart 64 – Battle Mode! We’ll run a free-for-all tournament on the N64. People that challenge our Gym Leaders at Pokemon X and Y during O’Week will also be able to get points. We hope to see you for a new year of gaming!

PS: If you can think of a better videogame-y word than “Adventurer” for the acronym, you may well be rewarded with some points!

EVAC in 2014!

Posted by Alethea Lim On February - 10 - 2014

Long time no post… but here’s some news for EVAC in 2014!

First off – the Pulp Fiction Comics discount. We’re trying something different this year – present your membership card at Pulp Fiction when buying any three comics, manga or graphic novels to receive a fourth title for FREE! This works out to be our best discount deal yet.

Pulp Fiction Comics has been a long time supporter of EVAC and you should give them a visit some time at 34a King William St, Adelaide.

EVAC membership will lapse during O’Week, during which you’ll need to pay to renew your membership ($5 for uni students, $10 for non-students). Membership is not required to attend EVAC meetings but does entitle you to the Pulp Fiction discount, the ability to influence the direction of EVAC via votes at our General Meetings and the ability to run for committee positions. When the club saves up enough cash, we can buy new games!

You can register for EVAC at O’Week or at any of our Friday meetings. During O’Week we will be on the Maths Lawns during Tuesday the 25th. If you own Pokemon X or Y you may even be able to challenge our gym leaders!

We hope to see you in 2014 for another exciting year of gaming!

EVAC is back for 2013!

Posted by Alethea Lim On March - 8 - 2013

Hi All, hope you’ve had a great summer break!

We had an awesome showing of new and old people at last week’s meeting, and as we continue on during the year we hope to see that kind of activity continue. Today (The 8th of March) we’ll be on in the CA Common Room. It’s in the Lady Symon room, accessible from the Cloisters. You may have to bang on the door to be let in!

We’ll also be in the CA Common room next week (15th of March), and in four weeks time on the 5th of April.

For the rest of the year, you should be able to find us on level four of Union House, either in the Harry Medlin, Margaret Murray or WP Rogers rooms.

Hope to see you soon!

EVAC 03/08/2012 – Post AVCon Depression

Posted by Alethea Lim On July - 31 - 2012

AVCon is over for another year, and the next one is far enough away that we don’t need to care about it for a while (except for VG Coordinator Jimmy, poor Jimmy) So let’s play some vidya without worrying about attendees getting their greasy mitts over everything and sudden catastrophic hardware failures.

4:00pm Harry Medlin Room, level 4 Union House.

Head to the forums to discuss the next meeting!
